Blog week #6 "Youth Work"

Youth Work

Quote: Youth Work itself has been subject to intensive political reform with increased measures of accountability, targeted approaches to work with young people at risk, and an emphasis on accrediting outcomes for young people”.

Some new ideas I’ve learned in the book presents the changing landscape of youth work, where professionals now engage with multiple agencies and statutory partnerships in order to achieve policy objectives in various areas such as health, crime, reduction, and education.

A key characteristic of a good youth worker is to act with integrity and maintain professional boundaries. Three vocabulary words I’ve learned were recognizing or approving a person, organization, or program as meeting certain standards or requirements. Inclusion: The act of ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their background or characteristics, have equal access to opportunities and resources. Diversity: The state of being diverse or having a range of different elements or characteristics.

Blog #5 "Breathe" from In the heights

A place where I’ve felt a strong sense of belonging is my grandparents house. This place holds a special place in my heart and has always made me feel connected and loved. My grandparents house is located in a small town in the countryside. The moment I enter the house, I am greeted by the warm embrace of love and familiarity.

What makes me feel connected to this space are the memories and moments I share with my grandparents. The house is filled with family photos and statues In ecuador and Colombia, with objects that remind me of our shared history. The smell of chicken and the smell of my grandparents homemade meals with their vibes and feeling of belonging through them along with the rest of my family. Every corner of the house holds a story, and being surrounded by those stories makes me feel a sense of rootedness and comfort.

Additionally the activities we engage in at my grandparents house contribute to the sense of belonging. We often gather around the dining table for meals and engage in lively conversations. Whether it’s playing card games, puzzles, or sharing stories by the kitchen because we're always in the kitchen making food and cracking jokes. These moments create a sense of connection and togetherness.

In relation to the song “Breathe” from in the Heights, it resonates with my experience of belonging at my grandparents house. The lyrics of the song reflect the themes of home and finding solace in familiar spaces. In the song, the character sings about returning to their childhood home and feeling a sense of peace and belonging. Similarly, when I visit my grandparents house, I experience a similar feeling of comfort and belonging. The song captures the emotions and sentiments that I associate with my grandparents' house.

Overall , my grandparents house is a place where I feel a deep sense of belonging. It is space filled with love, memories, and shared experiences that have helped shape me into the person I am today. Just like the song “Breath”, this space resonates with my experience of finding solace and belonging in a familiar and cherished place.
